Vision Instruments

Camera

Vision Instruments was established to develop and commercialise a retinal (eye) camera optimised for screening for retinopathy (retinal eye disease) in remote areas and the developing world.  The camera will also be suitable for general retinal imaging in Optometry and Ophthalmology.

The development of the camera commenced in 2001. Four prototypes had been developed, assisted by funding from AusIndustry and the Centre for Eye Research Australia. The final prototype was nearing being optimised in readiness for production, so Vision Instruments sought support from Springboard in preparation for commercialisation.

Springboard assisted the business to become more commercially focussed by introducing written agreements (eg for its staff, its shareholders and its clients). Strategic advice and mentoring to the board and management team were provided throughout the incubation period, especially in relation to commercialisation and interacting with the market place.
The company had a business plan but Springboard helped to make this more relevant by leading the company through a marketing strategy and creating a marketing plan.

The grant funds were used to finalise the development of the camera and prepare for going to market.

The company has now received orders for its first 7 cameras and plans to deliver the first camera in November 2009.
